H.264 vs H.265

H.264 vs H.265

Many of our new Body Worn Cameras now have the option to change the video compression to H.265 (also called HEVC - High Efficiency Video Coding) in order to store more video for less storage space.

*By default, all our body cams are set to H.264 (Advanced Video Coding) and you can change this via the settings.

HEVC uses efficient coding methods to maintain a 50% storage reduction and does this by encoding video at the lowest possible bit rate while maintaining the same high quality level video.

One of the main drawbacks with H.265 is that it requires more computing power and this therefore slightly reduces the battery life per charge by approximately 10%.

Comparison between H.265 & H.264 video compression:

Format Resolution Recording File
Size (MB)
Recording Time Recording File Size
/Per Hour (GB)
H.265 720P 30FPS 160 MB 10 minutes 0.94GB
H.264 720P 30FPS 300 MB 10 minutes 1.76GB

As H.265 video only uses half the storage size of H.264, it indicates that the user can use a 64GB body cam and it would act as a 128GB model in terms of storage size.
